Just Like Old Times

Micah Radler is following a Fayetteville tradition.

The junior is one in a long line of Lady Purple Bulldogs to compete in the Arkansas Overall Golf Championship on Oct. 15 at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock.

“Emma (Lavy) won it last year and as a ninth-grader,” Fayetteville golf coach Kyle Adams said. “My daughter Alex went as a junior. Hannah Lavy went as a sophomore and junior. It seems like we’ve had at least one girl in it the last several years.”

Radler has saved her best for late in the season and this year is no exception.

She shot a 1-under-par 71 to help Fayetteville run away with the 7A-West Conference title earlier this month and lost out in a playoff for medalist in the Class 7A State Tournament.

Radler and Conway’s Summer Roachelle were the only players to break 80 in the state tournament at Fianna Hills Country Club in Fort Smith.

“She’s done that the last three years,” Adams said. “Her best scores have come at the end.”

Adams said Radler has dedicated more time to golf this year.

“The last two years she’s been in cheerleading,” Adams said. “This year she’s dedicated her time to golf and it’s nice to see it pay off for her.”

Radler and Roachell are the likely favorites on the girls’ side. The overall tournament will only be 18 holes this year — rather than 27 like in previous years because the Pleasant Valley course recently completed its conversion of the greens to Champions Bermuda grass.

High Five! Fayetteville Wins State

FORT SMITH — The Fayetteville girls are still top ‘Dogs in 7A golf.

The Lady Purple’Dogs won their fifth straight state title Monday, winning the team title by six shots over runner-up Conway at Fianna Hills Country Club.

“We are very fortunate to have had some great girls come through the program,” Fayetteville coach Kyle Adams said. “This team didn’t want to be the first team that didn’t win it, they wanted to uphold the tradition.”

Fayetteville junior Micah Radler, shooting from the No. 2 spot, carded a 73 to lead the team and tied for medalist before losing out in a one-hole playoff.

“Micah had a great round today,” Adams said. “Every year that we have won we have had somebody come out and shoot one of their best rounds of the year, and she did it today.”

Fayetteville’s No. 1 player, Olivia Lavy, played through a wrist injury and managed an 84 and No. 3 Shelby Daniels also shot 84. Teams play four players and count the low three scores.

“Olivia didn’t play as well as she would have like today, but we needed her score,” Adams said. “Shelby is a sophomore and this is her first time to play in a big pressure tournament like this so she did great today.”

Conway’s Summer Roachelle won the medalist with a par on the first playoff hole, No. 18. She had a tap-in for par while Radler had a longer birdie putt and ran it about six feet past and missed her par putt coming back.

Conway’s other scores were Ericka Setzler with a 86 and Maegan Wade with 88.

Radler and Roachelle were the only players to break 80 and Fayetteville and Conway were the only schools below 300 for a team score.

Taylor Kline of Springdale Har-Ber shot an 87.

Fort Smith Southside def. Rogers Heritage

Carson Hunter had four kills to help the Confederettes slip past Heritage, 25-15, 25-12, 25-16.

The scrappy Lady War Eagles (5-12, 0-4) fought Southside (6-1, 3-1) point for point for much of the first game. Heritage was right there in the second game as well before a kill by Chelsea McKim jump-started a 16-3 run.

Springdale Har-Ber def. Fort Smith Northside

Springdale Har-Ber wasted little time in beating Fort Smith Northside 25-7, 25-17, 25-21.

The Lady Wildcats (7-1, 3-1) used a powerful service game to put pressure on the Lady Bears (5-5, 1-3), which caused Northside struggled to get the ball to its front row.

Leading 5-4 in the opening game, Har-Ber ran off 12 straight points to put the game out of reach quickly. Har-Ber’s Katie Huff started the run while Kailey Bain had three aces during it.

“We got what we came for,” Har-Ber coach Sandy Jones said of the conference win. “Our strategy all year has been to jump on them quickly. We serve hard at them so they don’t get a chance to set something up and that worked for us in the first two games.”

Northside was in control of the third game as it opened a 15-10 lead and later led 19-15. But that is when the Lady Wildcats started their comeback. Kellsie Pullen came up with a kill, Alicia Swearingen added an ace then Marisa Pless had a kill as Har-Ber trimmed the Lady Bears’ lead to 19-18.

Har-Ber eventually tied the game at 20 after a block but the Lady Wildcats scored the match’s last four points, 10 of the last 12, to seal the win. Pless and Huff had kills in the final points while Holly Huffman had a block.
