West Fork 35, Dardanelle 21

West Fork quarterback Isaac Muggy threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Tigers to a 4A-4 Conference road victory over Dardanelle.

Muggy’s final touchdown pass — a 6-yard toss in the third quarter — put West Fork (6-1, 3-1 4A-4) ahead to stay. Muggy then capped the scoring when he bolted 90 yards for a touchdown with 9:05 remaining.

Muggy threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Tyler DeWitt in the first quarter, scored on a 5-yard run early in the second quarter and threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Eakins later in the period. Dardanelle (4-3, 1-3), however, matched each West Fork score and forced a 21-21 halftime tie.

Shiloh Christian 35, Gentry 14

Kiehl Frazier passed for four touchdowns to lead the Saints to a 4A-1 Conference win in Champions Stadium.

Frazier was 12-of-14 for 231 yards and also added a rushing touchdown for the Saints (6-1, 4-0 4A-1). Frazier hit Jon Hawes on scoring tosses of 25 and 37 yards, while Chris Bryant caught a 29-yard TD pass and Colin Self caught a 15 yarder.

Caleb Ramsey scored two rushing touchdowns for the Pioneers (2-5, 1-3), while completing 7-of-16 for 184 yards.

Elkins 13, Mountainburg 8

Elkins made a two-touchdown halftime lead stand up in a 3A-1 Conference home win over Mountainburg.

Weston Curry scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter to help the Elks (3-3, 2-2 3A-1) to a 7-0 lead. Later in the quarter Robert Teague connected with Blake Bailey on a 10-yard scoring strike to increase the margin to 13-0 at the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Mountainburg (2-5, 2-2) scored to cut the deficit to 13-8, but the Elks held on from there.

CAC 26, Siloam Springs 24

Bryan Adair threw for three touchdowns, but overthrew a receiver in the end zone for the game-tying two-point conversion as Siloam Springs remained winless in 5A-West Conference play Friday.

Adair connected with Chris Villasenor on a 19-yard touchdown pass as time ran out to pull Siloam (3-4, 0-4 in 5A-West). But he and the Panthers, who trailed 26-10 with 8 minutes, 4 seconds left in the game, couldn’t force overtime.

Adair completed 29 of 48 passes for 356 yards, but also threw an interception which was returned for a touchdown. He threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Stuart Cifuentes and a 5-yarder to Cody Noble in the fourth quarter. Adair also had a two-point conversion pass to Cifuentes.

Huntsville 21, Pea Ridge 7

Huntsville rallied past Pea Ridge to even its 4A-1 Conference mark at home.

The Eagles (3-4, 2-2 4A-1) got on the board first on a Phillip Hoskins 5-yard run. After Pea Ridge (1-6, 0-4) tied the game at 7-7 in the third quarter, the Eagles took the lead for good on a short touchdown run by Wilson Phillips. The score was set up by a 44-yard run on fourth and one by Hoskins.

Huntsville ended the scoring on a 50-yard pass from Hoskins to Shannon Wilcutt.

Prairie Grove 41, Berryville 12

PRAIRIE GROVE — Quarterback Chad Austin ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead Prairie Grove past Berryville in 4A-1 Conference play Friday.

Prairie Grove (2-5, 2-2 4A-1) led 28-6 at halftime and cruised to the win. Thomas Soehner rushed for 154 yards on only 11 carries and two touchdowns in just a half for the Tigers. Soehner did not play in the second half because of a hand injury.

Quarterback Eric Holman threw a pair of touchdown passes to Ryan Nance for Berryville (1-5-1, 0-4).

Republic, Mo. 27, McDonald County, Mo. 22

Republic’s Tyan Sifferman scored his fourth touchdown of the night with 2 minutes, 12 seconds left in the game to lift the Tigers past McDonald County on Friday night.

Sifferman ran for 283 yards on 20 carries and four touchdowns for Republic (3-5).

John Graham’s two-point conversion run gave McDonald County (1-7) a 22-21 lead with 10 minutes left in the game. Graham also had 50-yard touchdown run on an end around.

Kilby Shockley led the Mustands with 120 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown, while teammate Nelson Boyd added 115 yards on 22 carries and a score. Boyd’s 1-yard touchdown run pulled McDonald County within a point in the fourth quarter.

McDonald County plays at Branson next week beginning at 7 p.m.

Cedarville 21, Lincoln 6

LINCOLN — The Cedarville Pirates put a damper on Lincoln’s homecoming festivities.

Cedarville’s Blake Morton scrambled 26 yards to put Cedarville up 7-0.

The Wolves (1-6, 0-4 3A-1) retaliated just over two minutes later when Bao Nguyen ran 47 yards for the score. The PAT was no good and Lincoln trailed 7-6.

The second half belonged to the Pirates (2-5, 1-3), scoring on their initial drive of the third quarter to go up 13-6, and later added another touchdown.

— WASHINGTON COUNTY PRESS-ENTERPRISE

JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL

Springdale Southwest 24, Rogers Heritage 21

Eighth-grade Brian Lemus hit a field goal with less than a minute left to lift Southwest past Heritage on Thursday night.

Dalton Clinkscales’ second touchdown, this one coming on a long run, tied the game at 21.

Quarterback Casey Paraday threw for two scores, including one to Clinkscales, for a 13-0 Southwest lead. He threw another to David Karr.

Ramsey May Play Friday

Gentry PioneersGENTRY — Gentry coach Brian Little is optimistic that senior quarterback Caleb Ramsey will be available for Friday’s game against Shiloh Christian.

Ramsey suffered what Little called a “low grade concussion” in Friday’s 24-7 victory against Pea Ridge. This season, Gentry is 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the 4A-1 Conference.

“(Ramsey) is fine and everybody reacts different,” Little said. “It will be something that is decided by his parents. He was checked out by the paramedics at the game.”

Little said the Pioneers will have the daunting task of trying to match up with the Saints.

“Shiloh has six, eight kids that can play Division I football,” Little said.

Gravette Defense Tightens Up In Second Half

GRAVETTE — A couple of defensive adjustments proved critical for Gravette (5-0, 2-0) on Friday.

Gentry jumped on Gravette for an early 14-0 lead but the Lions’ defense regrouped and only gave up a second-half field goal in a 30-17 victory.

Gravette has given up just 39 points in five games and for Bill Harrelson that has been one of the biggest surprises of the season.

“Our defense has played so well,” Harrelson said. “They really have been a surprise, a really pleasant surprise. I didn’t expect to have two shutouts and we are giving up less than eight points a game.

“They have done a good job running to the football. They did a great job Friday night after we made some adjustments to shutdown Gentry. Gentry has a powerful offensive team.”

Gravette hosts Huntsville Friday night.

Rankin Dodged Bullets At Summer Job

GENTRY — Like many are area high school seniors, Gentry football player Jerred Rankin had a full-time job over the summer.

Likely none had a job that required crawling in the dark of night under machine gun fire. And yes, the rounds were live.

Rankin spent his summer at Fort Jackson near Columbia, S.C., at National Guard boot camp. Rankin left Gentry on June 10 and returned Aug. 21.

Rankin, who missed all of the Pioneers’ summer workouts and most of August preseason drills, earned around $2,500. But the experience was priceless.

Rankin isn’t sure if he will make a career out of the military, but is set on serving in the National Guard. He currently goes to Fort Chaffee near Fort Smith once a month for drills.

“It was something I’m proud I did for the country,” Rankin said. “But, it was pretty warm.”

Rankin’s day this past summer started at 4:30 a.m. and ended around 9 p.m.

“We did everything from P.T. (physical training) to shooting,” Rankin said. “We did all that good stuff.”

The most difficult part of the training, Rankin said, involved crawling under live machine gun fire during night drills.

“It’s called a night infiltration course where you crawl and get shot at over your head,” Rankin said. “They shoot an M-42 Bravo machine gun at you, which is a pretty big round. They shoot it over your head and you have to crawl.”

In addition to the machine gun fire, simulated grenade explosions were going off nearby.

“You get so tired because of the stress, you want to stand up,” Rankin said. “But you can’t, obviously. That was probably the hardest thing mentally and physically.”

Gentry coach Brian Little had no problem with Rankin leaving for the summer and said the experience has made Rankin a better football player.

“He missed quite a bit of football, but I told him, ‘you bet, go do what you got to do.’ That is something he may pursue after high school and we said we will wait on you and you will have a spot on the team when you get back.

“I told the kids he was going to serve our country and we wanted to support him wholeheartedly.”

Teams Facing Must Wins In 4A-1 This Week

SPRINGDALE — Following last week’s lopsided 27-6 loss against Farmington, Gentry coach Brian Little told his players to simply let it go. As tough as it was, Little said the Pioneers had no other choice but to look ahead to their next opponent (Gravette) and start preparing like it was the first week of the season.

“It’s tough, but you can’t afford to look behind in this league, especially after a tough loss,” Little said. “No matter what, you have to keep looking forward, or before you know it, you’ll just find yourself in a worse situation.”

At 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the 4A-1 Conference, it’s still relatively early in the season. However, Little said Gentry is already facing a must-win this week against Gravette because the schedule doesn’t get any easier.

And the Pioneers certainly aren’t alone.

Out of the four teams (Gentry, Berryville, Huntsville and Pea Ridge) that started the conference season with a loss, all of them have only one win in four games this season, making the sense of urgency a growing concern.

“I know there are a lot of teams that need wins this week, there’s no question,” Little said. “Starting the conference season off with a loss isn’t easy, but teams have to get that win as soon as possible, because it builds confidence, it gets the wheels going in motion and really helps for situations down the road.”

To make things more interesting, this week is also rivalry week for teams in the 4A-1, with Farmington hosting Prairie Grove and Gentry hosting Gravette; Huntsville is also hosting Berryville in a pseudo-rivalry game of Madison County vs. Carroll County.

Prairie Grove coach Danny Abshier said the rivalry aspect of this week can sometimes change team’s approach to the games.

“People can easily focus on negative stuff away from the game, whether it’s rumors that get started or whatever,” said Abshier, whose Tigers are coming off a 49-30 victory against Huntsville, their first victory of the season. “But that’s not smart to do. Like I tell my kids, we keep our mouths shut and we go out and take care of what we need to take care of in order to try and win the game.”

Friday’s Games In 4A-1 Conference

Berryville at Huntsville
Prairie Grove at Farmington
Gravette at Gentry

LINCOLN — Adrian Rojas returned an interception for a touchdown and scored again on a short run to lead Greenland past Lincoln in 3A-1 Conference play Friday.

After a scoreless first half, the Pirates scored with 5:36 left in the third quarter when Justin Bramall caught 13-yard touchdown pass. Rojas’ PAT was good to put the Pirates up 7-0.

The Pirates (2-2, 1-0) scored again when Rojas intercepted a Lincoln pass and returned it 75 yards to score with 6:28 remaining in the fourth quarter. He added the PAT to make it 14-0.

Rojas added a short touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Lincoln (1-3, 0-1) travels to Elkins next week.

Pottsville 35, West Fork 7

POTTSVILLE — Tyler Robertson ran for three touchdowns as Pottsville rolled past previously undefeated West Fork in the 4A-4 Conference opener for both teams.

Robertson’s 15-yard touchdown run with 1:33 left in the first quarter gave the Apaches (3-1, 1-0) a lead they never relinquished. The fullback then put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, scoring on runs of 2 and 55 yards in a 72-second span.

Pottsville’s other scoring came in the second quarter on a 32-yard run by Jay Wright and a 41-yard burst by Ty Earls off a fake punt. West Fork (3-1, 0-1) scored in the third quarter on Landon Hutchens’ 72-yard touchdown run, with Griff Smith adding the extra point.

West Fork returns to conference action next week at home against Dover, while Pottsville travels to Dardanelle.

Greenbrier 42, Siloam Springs 24

Greenbrier scored three touchdowns off Siloam Springs turnovers to claim the 5A-West Conference opener for both teams Friday.

Greenbrier led 28-7 at halftime, but Siloam (3-1, 0-1) cut the lead to 28-24 late in the third quarter.

Siloam quarterback Bryan Adair scored on an 8-yard run and also threw at 40-yard touchdown pass to Greg Frabotta to pull his team within three. Those touchdowns were sandwiched around a Pablo Castillo 22-yard field goal.

Greenbrier answered for a 35-24 lead, then intercepted an Adair pass and returned it for a touchdown to set the final score.

Siloam took the opening kickoff and drove to the Greenbrier 5, but fumbled a pitch and Greenbrier scooped it up and returned it for a score. Siloam then fumbled the ensuing kickoff, which led to another Greenbrier touchdown.

Farmington 27, Gentry 6

Jared Martin ran for two touchdowns to help Farmington open 4A-1 Conference play with a victory on Friday.

Martin scored on a 2-yard run and also added a 39-yard touchdown run with under two minutes left in the game. Farmington (2-1-1, 1-0) rushed for 315 yards.

The Cardinals led 15-0 at halftime.

Gentry (1-3, 0-1) scored on a 30-yard pass from Caleb Ramsey to Justin Stewart in the third quarter.

Prairie Grove 49, Huntsville 30

PRAIRIE GROVE — Thomas Soehner rushed for 251 yards on 23 carries with five touchdowns to lead the Tigers to their first win of the season over 4A-1 Conference foe Huntsville ib Friday night.

Soehner’s 251 yards accounted for the bulk of Prairie Grove’s offense as the Tigers passed only one time for 7 yards. Phillip Hoskins led the way for Huntsville, rushing for 147 yards and a touchdown.

Prairie Grove (1-3, 1-0 4A-1 Conference) plays at Farmington, while Huntsville (1-3, 0-1 4A-1 Conference) hosts Berryville next week.

Mount Vernon 28, McDonald County 12

Mount Vernon turned a 7-6 second quarter lead into a 21-6 halftime advantage by scoring two touchdowns in 21 seconds late in the second quarter to key the Mountaineers’ 28-12 win over McDonald County on Friday night.

Mount Vernon quarterback Corey Phillips was instrumental in all three of Mount Vernon’s first-half scores, including a 35-yard touchdown pass with 37 seconds left in the half and 32-yard run with 16 second remaining.

McDonald County (0-5) scored first to take an early 6-0 lead, taking the opening kickoff and marching 68 yards in 13 plays. Cameron Farmer hit Nelson Boyd from 6 yards out to cap the drive.

The teams traded touchdowns in the second half. Mount Vernon stretched the lead to 28-6 on Hunter Brown’s 15yard run before Farmer scored on a 1-yard run.

Farmer finished 13 of 27 passing for 103 yards and a touchdown. Boyd totaled 53 yards on 15 carries.

McDonald County is at Seneca next week.

Small School Notes: Panthers Gearing Up For Season Opener

SILOAM SPRINGS — After a preseason scrimmage against Springdale High last week, Siloam Springs coach Bryan Ross knew his team wasn’t conditioned enough.

Despite a recent heat wave, Ross said his players were getting tired too early and too often, something he blamed himself for as the Panthers’ first-year coach.

“At this point, we shouldn’t be getting tired like that, we should be able to play through that,” Ross said. “So this last week, we just worked on that by doing a lot more of it in practice, like running and certain drills. I feel like we’re getting closer to where I want this team to be.”

Ross, who also said his team wasn’t as physical as Springdale High in the scrimmage, said the Panthers have had several good practices recently.

“In football, you can either be the hammer or the nail, and we want to be the hammer,” Ross said.

For Ross, Friday night will be a new experience as Siloam’s new coach. Ross said he hasn’t thought about how he’ll feel before the game, but figures it won’t be a big factor.

“I’ll be nervous, that’s for sure,” Ross said. “I’ve been looking forward to this opportunity, so I hope we can play well against a very good Farmington team.”

— Nathan Allen

Eagles Not Afraid Of Tough Opponents

HUNTSVILLE — Huntsville is hoping it can change a growing trend Friday night.

The Eagles haven’t had much success in their nonconference schedule the last three years, especially against rival Harrison. But coach Ken Harriman said his players have more confidence this year than ever before, something he hopes could help them win the game.

“Harrison will always be Harrison,” Harriman said. “We’re not afraid to play teams like that; we want the challenge because it lets us know where we’re at. Last year, the score got out of hand, and our guys remember that, so we’re hoping we can change that on Friday.”

Harriman said the biggest goal is to limit the Goblins’ big plays, on both offense and defense.

“We’ve stressed to our defense not to give up the big play,” Harriman said. “We want to keep the ball in front of us. If Harrison scores, we want to make them bleed through the eyes to get it. We just want to play good fundamental football and get a solid outing from our kids.”

Ramsey’s Knee Just Fine

GENTRY — Coach Brian Little and the Gentry Pioneers got a little scare in last week’s scrimmage.

But all is well.

Starting quarterback Caleb Ramsey, who had knee surgery in December, hurt his knee against West Fork but the senior returned and passed for almost 140 yards and one touchdown against the Tigers.

Little said Ramsey will be ready to go Thursday when the Pioneers open the season at Colcord, Okla.

“Caleb just tweaked it a little and the doctor said everything is okay,” Little said. “Caleb did some good things in the scrimmage. We are going to go as he goes. He played well but there is room for improvement. There is always room for improvement.”

Gentry – Beyond The Box Score

Why Gentry Will Win
Gentry returns 15 starters, including eight on offense. Senior quarterback Caleb Ramsey has been the starter since his sophomore season and is completely healed from offseason knee surgery. The offensive line also lends experience, and coach Brian Little said team strength and speed is better.

Why Gentry Will Struggle
Lack of depth and lack of experience at receiver are big concerns. The Pioneers face a tough nonconference schedule, and four of their seven conference games are on the road. Winning on the road will be a must if Gentry hopes to return to the playoffs for the first time since 1998.

Crucial Games

at Pea Ridge, Oct. 9
After opening league play with games against traditional heavyweights Farmington and Gravette, Gentry plays Pea Ridge in a must-win game. With Shiloh looming the following week, the Pioneers can’t afford a loss here.

Berryville, Oct. 23
The first of back-to-back home games and the first of three games against teams picked to finish in the bottom half of the league standings. Gentry must finish strong to advance to the postseason.

at Huntsville, Nov. 6
This game determined a playoff spot a year ago, and fourth place could be on the line again. Gentry was banged up at the end of last season, and the question here will be can the Pioneers overcome a lack of depth when it counts most.

All In The Family
Pioneers defensive coordinator Daniel Ramsey will coach both his sons — Caleb and Ethan. Caleb will start at quarterback and will play free safety. Ethan will log time at running back and inside linebacker. Coach Ramsey coached at Rogers Oakdale Junior High before joining coach Brian Little in Gentry.

Outside The Lines
Kicker Robbie White is tops when it comes to classroom performance. The senior carries a 3.97 grade point average. Not far behind is running back/linebacker Ethan Ramsey, who carries a 3.75 GPA … Assistant coach Marty Edmiston is a 1991 graduate of Prairie Grove.

By The Numbers
1 — Gentry has just one sophomore in the starting lineup
3 — Quarterback Caleb Ramsey is a three-year starter for the Pioneers
15 — Gentry has 15 seniors on the roster and 14 of the Pioneers’ 22 starters are seniors
1998 — Gentry’s last playoff appearance was in 1998.

How The Pioneers Look

On The Ground
Ethan Ramsey, Kyle Miller, Justin Wilks and Nick Weeks will all see time at running back. Miller had 182 yards on 55 carries a year ago.

“I haven’t had that much depth at running back,” said Gentry coach Brian Little. “I feel real comfortable with that. In one- and two-back sets, those guys will be in the rotation there.”

Quarterback Caleb Ramsey is also a threat to run after picking up 896 yards on the ground his sophomore season in 2007.

Through The Air
Ramsey returns for his third season at quarterback, but the 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior had knee surgery in the offseason. Ramsey, who passed for 1,586 yards and 10 touchdowns despite being hurt for most of last year, will wear a knee brace.

One of Little’s top concerns is there is no proven receiver. Robert Henderson, Kevin Scherer, Mario Orozco and Justin Stewart are the top receivers. Henderson (5-11, 185) had 35 catches for 576 yards a year ago while Stewart (5-10, 165) had 32 catches for 329 yards.

Scherer was injured last year but had 18 touchdown receptions during 7-on-7 competition in the summer.

Caleb Ramsey will pull double duty and play free safety with the Pioneers’ defense.

In The Trenches
Little will count on four seniors — Clint James, Derek McCain, Austin Duncan and Elisha Patterson — to pave the way on the offensive front. Center Tyler Rosenthal is the only underclassman.

“All those guys are pretty universal,” Little said. “Patterson is a three-year starter and he is a good technician. Patterson really understands what we are doing. We have pretty good depth on the offensive line. I know, despite my passing background, that games are won or lost up front. I feel we will be able to establish a running game.”

Patterson (5-7, 180) will also start at defensive tackle, while Rosenthal (5-7, 215) will also start at linebacker. The other linebackers will be sophomore Kolby Rankin (5-4, 135) and Henderson (5-11, 185)

James (6-0, 194), a transfer from Oklahoma, will also start at defensive end. Weeks (5-11, 180) will be at the other end position. McCain (6-0, 245) is another two-way starter and will play defensive tackle.

Special Teams
Robbie White will handle all placements while Caleb Ramsey will do some of the punting. White hit 15 of 17 PAT attempts last year and 5 of 9 field-goal attempts. He averaged 44 yards on kickoffs. Ramsey averaged 31 yards a punt a year ago. White also did some punting as a junior, averaging 29 yards a punt.

“Right now, White is doing it all,” Little said. “Caleb will still do some punting.”

Stewart (5-10, 165) handled all the returns a year ago and will do the same this season.

Intangibles
A brutal nonconference schedule that includes Charleston and Siloam Springs will test the Pioneers early. But Little said his senior class has grown and matured the past three years. This bunch of Gentry players is also pretty good in the classroom as Little proudly listed the nine players that have a 3.5 GPA or better on an information sheet he distributes to the media.

Overall
Gentry has seniors at key positions, and playing for a playoff spot the final week of the season in 2008 gave the program a needed boost. The Pioneers are also familiar with the system Little brought to the school, and a productive offseason made Gentry stronger and faster.

“Our strength and size is an improvement for us,” Little said. “That gives me a positive outlook for this season.”

But the Pioneers still have no recent tradition, last making the postseason in 1998. They also have six road games, including four conference road trips. To finish in the top four, Gentry must pickoff a few games on the road.
Prediction: 5-6
