On Wednesday, Chip Souza (sports editor), Alex Abrams (sports writer) and myself had the privledge of going to Robert E. Lee Elementary in Springdale to be a part of their Career Day. For about three hours, we had the privledge of talking to about five different classes full of fourth- and fifth-graders.
We told them about our jobs, they asked us questions (very good ones, I might add) and we showed them what our newspaper (The Morning News) looks like.
One of the best things we did was allowed them to be sports writers for a couple of moments. From every class, we randomly chose two students: one acted like a sports writer and the other acted like an athlete. The sports writer had to ask a series of three questions (any three they wanted) to ask the athlete, and then the athlete had to come up with some kind of answer.
Needless to say, it was a lot of fun listening to the kids, hearing their questions and especially their answers. There’s one question from fourth grader Kyler Gatchel that really threw all of us for a loop — all I’ll say is it involves eating nachos at midnight!
The kids that participated were Jamar Gatewood, Peyton Stewman, Gatchel, Jesus Franco, Edward Alfaro, Jamaya Gatewood, Kaliana Howard, Hannah Breaux, Dylan Bible, Jennifer Barroso, Aaron McCormick and Katelyn Kannady. They all did a great job and we enjoyed coming to talk to them.
Below, I’ve put together an audio clip of some of their best questions and answers. I hope you enjoy this as much as Chip, Alex and myself did.
