Shiloh Christian goes down, Springdale High blows out Alma and Fayetteville tie Russellville after totalling more than 500 yards of offense. Yeah, it was a pretty typical night of high school football in Northwest Arknasas.

I think everybody expected Shiloh and Greenwood to be a good matchup, but I don’t anybody expected Greenwood to win the game. Here’s some interesting stats from the game: 1,195 combined yards of total offense, 961 combined passing yards, and both quarterbacks (Shiloh’s Kiehl Frazier and Greenwood’s Tyler Shook) combined for 63-of-96 passing. Ummm … Wow.

It’ll be interesting to see where Shiloh ends up in this week’s top polls.

Springdale High’s offense was about as dominant as its been all season, blowing out Alma 41-0. Junior quarterback Joseph Calcagni threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns, easily being on of his best games this year.

“I think we played well, but we still had a lot of mistakes,” said Eli Drinkwitz, Springdale High’s offensive coordinator. “I think we made a lot of great strides tonight, but we’ve definitely got a long way to go.”

Fayetteville is 1-1-1 right now, and things aren’t looking great at Harmon Field. Take away their long blowout victory against a terrible Little Rock Central team, and the Purple’Dogs haven’t really done much this season. They lost to Jefferson City, Mo., by two points last week and tied Russellville Friday night after combining for 500 yards of total offense. How does that happen? Seems to me the Bulldogs need to get it together, and fast … They host No. 1-ranked Bentonville this week.

The other interesting note from Friday night includes Prairie Grove going to 0-3 after a blowout loss to West Fork, which is appearing to be better than last year’s 9-2 team. The Grovers, as we like to call them in the Morning News sports department, just haven’t found any offensive rhythm all season long — and this is certainly not the way coach Danny Abshier envisioned entering 4A-1 Conference play.

I thought it was interesting how Greenwood slipped four spots to No. 4 in the Class 5A poll after losing to Har-Ber 35-0 on Friday night. Also, Shiloh Christian is ranked No. 4 in the overall poll.

Last fall, I found out about a Web site based out of California (CalPreps) that offers a lot of in-depth information about high school sports. Even though the site is on the west coast and bases most of its information on California teams, the site also offers predictions for nearly every high school football game (every week) on every state in the country.

Want to know how accurate the site is? Last season alone, the site predicted 79.3 percent of all Arkansas games correctly (897-234). In fact, out of every high school game played in America last season, the site predicted — get this —80 percent (54,577-13,656) correctly.

And the site doesn’t only give a prediction, it gives a predicted score. If you think about that, it’s quite the accomplishment to predict HS games that well. The highest week of predictions was 85.4 percent and the lowest was 66.7 percent. The site also offers rankings, information and other assorted information any high school sports fan would enjoy.

Here’s the amazing thing — the site predicted games for every state last season, and the lowest season average for all 50 states was 74.4 percent in Rhode Island. Some averages were as high as 85 percent.

It’s an interesting site, it’s updated all the time and even updates the actual scores with predicted scores. The score it predicted for Fayetteville’s game against LR Central on Monday was the Purple’Dogs winning 35-7, and they won 31-0. Not bad, huh?

Welcome to week one of the high school football season. I’m going to go ahead and post the latest AP rankings for every high school classification. There really aren’t many surprises. Kurt Voigt and myself (Nathan Allen) are both AP voters, and I’ve listed my ballot down below.

The Tigers got the nod for No. 1 after winning the state championship last season. Bentonville has a strong running game and another stout defense. Fayetteville, which got beat by Shiloh last week in a preseason scrimmage, is ranked fourth and Shiloh is fifth.
